Pringle Richards Sharratt has been appointed by Penwith District Council to develop the design of the new fish market at Newlyn to RIBA stage C.

Whilst both Penwith District Council and the harbour commissioners recognise that a core objective is to provide a new, high quality facility that serves the long term specific needs of the Newlyn fishing fleet, its market and merchants.  It is also critical that this should be done in a manner that meets or addresses the aims and aspirations of the community as a whole and engages fully with Newlyn as a place.

In developing the proposals we are meeting with members of the local community, artists and other interested parties to establish ways in which, outside the morning time slot occupied by the fish market, the building may also be opened up to the wider public for alternative uses such as farmer’s markets, public gatherings etc.

In addition we are exploring the notion of in some way recognising the community of fishermen and the significant organisations that have made Newlyn what it is today including the involvement of local artists and craftsmen in the design of the buildings surfaces and elements where possible.

William Stevenson’s collection of photographs and artifacts is a significant and probably undervalued Newlyn asset and might be recognised in the new building in some manner.

Meetings have been held with the Planners and Local Councilors, who are highly supportive of the introduction of a modern building onto this prominent site in Newlyn.
