New The Department for Transport has confirmed that following the withdrawal of the last remaining objection, a formal decision on the draft order will be made in the next few months. The order is currently being considered by the Secretary of State for Transport before it replaces the former Newlyn Pier and Harbour Order from 1996. Ten new commissioners will then go through an application process before being appointed by a selection panel. Newlyn harbourmaster Andrew Munson confirmed the new members would be selected from a wide range of applicants. He said: "These people could include boat owners and local councillors and will be appointed by the panel. Hype "There's a lot of hype about the order but I can't see how things will change yet." Newlyn fishing community has welcomed the move, hoping it will help the port to move on. One of the most complex decisions expected from the new commission is on the proposed £7m fish market. Nick Howells of the proposed Newlyn Fishing Community Interest Company which has been put forward to run the new fish market, says the industry is looking forward to balanced discussions on the future of the port. He said: "Balanced discussion is what everybody is looking for from the new order and commercial decisions to suit everybody in the port. "Some people say there's not enough of good people to get on it but I think there will be enough people and it's the only way forward. What's Newlyn without its fish market?" Welcomed The order has also been welcomed by W Stevenson and Sons who represent more than 50% of fish sold in the market. Partner Elizabeth Stevenson hopes it will bring 'common sense' and 'stability' to the port. article copyright THE CORNISHMAN |
